Vocabulary

Is your child having difficulty reading? The first problem to address is vocabulary. Learning English vocabulary will improve your child’s performance on school quizzes and tests, on the SAT, and in college level reading courses

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies’ eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde’s Hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde’s door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

Students who don’t know these terms are in danger of making major grammatical errors on their essays. All these topics and much more are covered in the first three months of our grammar program.

Remember: If an English tutor isn’t teaching grammar, your child’s writing will not improve. The tutor can revise papers for you, but your child will learn very little.

Writing

Want to learn how to write? Write more essays.

Unfortunately, most school teachers are responsible for 100-150 students. As a result, they can’t give many writing assignments. With such large classes, each assignment takes weeks to review and correct. By that time, the student has forgotten what he wrote and looks only at the final grade. Under these conditions, it is hard for kids to improve their writing.

At Improve Your English, your child will write an essay or a portion of an essay each week. That means that each week, she is thinking about arguments, crafting paragraphs, and editing sentences. And she will receive immediate, personal feedback from her tutor. We’re even available outside of lessons to help your child make edits on school assignments.
